What’s So Great About Dental Implants?

There are various reasons adults may lose their teeth, for instance trauma or due to dental diseases, such as gum disease. The dentalcleaning-150x150result, however, is almost always the same: concern. For some patients the fears are primarily esthetic, but for others losing a tooth or teeth can mean decreased functionality chewing or even speaking clearly. Thanks to modern dentistry, though, patients have many more comfortable and natural-looking options available to help them complete their smiles. Partial or complete dentures often come to mind when a person suffers from teeth loss. But for many patients, dental implants can be the best choice, because of both their durability and their natural look.

The Steps Involved in Dental Implants

At Downey Family Cosmetic Dentistry we’re able to perform all parts of the dental implant procedure, from the initial consultation to the final placement of the prosthetic crown, making the process smoother and easier on our patients.

If a patient is a good fit for dental implants, the first step is to place a titanium post into the mouth. Over time the post will actually fuse with the jawbone.

Titanium is not only a strong metal, it is highly biocompatible, which means it’s better suited than most metals to bond with the human bone. Unlike metals used in past dentistry, titanium is both a permanent solution, and much safer. In fact, it’s considered “osseointegrative,” which basically means that the metal is directly connected to the structure and function of the bone. This is why it’s become a common choice for not only dental implants, but joint replacements and hearing implants as well.

Once the titanium post has fused to the jawbone, it creates a permanent base for the second step of completing the smile, a false tooth. This porcelain crown is crafted to match a person’s other teeth, and affixed to the post, so that when the implant is completed, it’s nearly, and sometimes completely, undistinguishable from the surrounding teeth.

Discussing Dental Sedation

Your dental care involves more than visits to the dentist’s office, and maintaining a beautiful, healthy smile requires consistent effort on your part at home. Still, regular dental care, and sometimes, cosmetic or restorative services, is necessary to the long-term integrity of your teeth, gums, and oral tissues. To help make receiving dental treatment easier and more comfortable, or to ease your anxiety over visiting the dentist, we may consult with you about the benefits of sedation dentistry. (more…)

How Dental Implants Save Smiles from Tooth Loss

smileThe thing about tooth loss is that, even though it is permanent, the loss of one or more teeth doesn’t affect everyone the same. While some patients might find it devastating and are anxious to replace the tooth/teeth that they’ve lost, others might not consider missing teeth a significant concern. Unfortunately, losing a tooth is dramatic whether or not it influences your confidence, and the consequences of an incomplete smile can continue to affect you long after the tooth is gone. With dental implants, however, you can save your smile from the risks associated with tooth loss, and thereby preserve your healthy, natural smile for life. (more…)

Your Dentist Explores How Animals Care for Their Teeth

contemplating-hygieneCountless hours of research over thousands of years have brought us a profound understanding of our teeth and oral health. Fruits of this labor include innovative dental treatments for some of the most destructive oral health issues, like tooth decay and gum disease. We’ve also been able to develop a specified dental hygiene guideline: brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss at least once, and visit your dentist every six months for a dental checkup and cleaning. Our animal friends, however, do not have dentists, dental research, or toothbrushes, for that matter. So, how do our fellow earth-dwellers care for their dental health? Today, we explore the wild and crazy ways that animals keep their teeth healthy and strong.

Good Dental Health – For Animals!

  • Among the most interesting animal teeth are those of the shark. While humans have adopted the practice of treating our teeth with fluoride for greater cavity protection, sharks teeth are comprised of the mineral. In other words, shark teeth create their own toothpaste.
  • Even though sharks don’t develop cavities, they do lose teeth every week. However, rather than seeking a professional to replace these teeth, sharks grow their own replacements from row upon row of backup teeth. In fact, a shark can have over 20,000 teeth in its lifetime.
  • Crocodiles proudly replace their lost teeth, as well. The giant reptiles carry around 60 teeth at any one time, but can grow a total of 2-3,000 teeth during their lives.
  • Interestingly, crocodiles actually do have a little help in their dental hygiene. The aptly-named crocodile bird perches on the crocodile’s open mouth and cleans the crocodile’s teeth with its beak.
  • The largest tooth belongs to the elephant, whose tusks are actually inverted incisors. An elephant’s tusk can weigh over 200 pounds each.
  • An elephant’s molar is almost as impressive; the behemoth’s back tooth measures about seven inches squared.

How to Prepare for a Dental Emergency

older-man-brushing-healthy-teethUnlike most dental health issues, a dental emergency isn’t always easily preventable. However, with due diligence and care, you can significantly lower the risk of a dental emergency irreversibly damaging your teeth. In the spirit of prevention, which is a cornerstone of effective dental care, we explain how to keep your teeth as healthy and strong as possible to fortify them against a potential dental emergency.

Keep Your Teeth Strong

Did you know that your teeth are the strongest part of your body? In fact, the enamel that surrounds and protects them is stronger than any other substance on earth, next to diamonds. Unfortunately, your teeth don’t automatically remain your strongest asset; they require a steady supply of minerals like calcium and phosphate—the building blocks of healthy tooth enamel. Also, by brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day and attending a dental checkup and cleaning as often as recommended, you can help avoid enamel erosion from bacteria-produced acid. Since your tooth enamel can’t recover once it’s completely compromised, maintaining healthy enamel is your best shot at preventing damage to your teeth.

Keep Your Teeth Healthy

Direct dental damage is more likely when your teeth, or their foundation of gum and jawbone, are compromised by disease. Adequate dental hygiene helps prevent dental disease formation by controlling oral bacteria and the dental plaque they form. These germs and the substances they produce (i.e., acids, toxins, and volatile sulfur compounds) are the main cause behind tooth decay, gum disease, and chronic bad breath. Along with regular dental checkups and cleanings, good dental hygiene can help you avoid the risks of diseased and weakened teeth.

What to Expect from Cosmetic Dentistry

clear-bracesThe way you feel about your smile is very important. A discolored smile, a smile that displays cracks or chips, or teeth that have poor texture can all cause you to feel somewhat disappointed in your appearance. Unfortunately, even if you feel good about your accomplishments and your general beauty, you may find that you feel the need to hide your smile from others, which can cause your confidence to decline. The good news is that we offer cosmetic dentistry to improve smile imperfections. From small concerns to a general dissatisfaction with the way your smile looks, we offer a long list of treatments to provide you with a stunning transformation.

First Things First

Before we begin extolling the benefits of cosmetic dentistry and creating your personalized care plan, we will need to make sure that your smile is in good shape. If you are suffering from issues like gum disease or tooth decay, we will begin by suggesting restorative care to improve your oral health. From there, we will reevaluate your smile and begin working on its overall appearance.

Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments

There is no one treatment or set of treatments right for every single patient. Instead, we meet with each patient to discuss preferences, smile goals, and to explain treatment options. Look over the following cosmetic dentistry treatments we offer to determine which one or combination may best suit your needs:

  • Teeth Whitening: We can address most types of discoloration with teeth whitening, brightening your smile by several shades.
  • Tooth Contouring: Contouring addresses concerns with excessive tooth tissue or texture concerns, such as sharp points – we will use this cosmetic treatment to gently reshape your teeth.
  • Teeth Bonding: Bonding adds the illusion of tissue to improve your smile, closing gaps, elongating teeth, covering stains and cracks, and improving chips.
  • Cosmetic Veneers: Veneers are porcelain casings that we will bond over the visible portion of your teeth – they will create a façade for a dramatic smile makeover. You can expect to fill spaces, change tooth shape, size, and length, improve whiteness, and gently improve alignment.
  • Clear Braces: We offer ClearCorrect and Invisalign. Both are orthodontic systems that rely on the use of clear aligner trays to shift your teeth into place through virtually invisible treatment.

Tooth Extraction Quiz: True or False

mature-man-surrounded-by-questions

Have we recently told you that a tooth extraction will keep your smile healthy? If so, you may wonder how removing a tooth is a helpful treatment. You may also wonder what to expect. First, it is important to recognize that our goal is to protect your smile, which means we will only suggest the removal of a tooth if absolutely essential. Another priority of ours is to ensure our patients feel at ease and comfortable. Whatever worries or concerns you have regarding extractions, we encourage you to clear up confusion and regain a sense of confidence regarding your upcoming treatment by learning more with the following quiz:

Extraction Quiz: True or False?

  1. True or False: Extractions may be a bit uncomfortable but they are over very quickly.
  2. True or False: We suggest extractions when your tooth is too severely damaged or infected to remain in your mouth any longer.
  3. True or False: After your extraction you will need to deal with the open space in your mouth – this is worthwhile because your mouth will be healthy.
  4. True or False: Healing after a tooth extraction is simple – you will simply need to eat soft foods and avoid dislodging the clots that form.

Answer Key

  1. False. Before beginning an extraction – just like with any treatment – we will apply an anesthetic to your tooth and the surrounding tissue. You will be numb for a relaxing experience. We will monitor your comfort throughout the procedure, so you continue to feel at ease.
  2. True. We will only suggest the removal of your tooth when other restorative treatments cannot rescue it and allow it to remain in your mouth. Or, if the tooth is threatening other teeth and tissues, we may suggest removal.
  3. False. We will immediately speak with your about replacing your tooth with a beautiful, stable dental implant.
  4. True. You may need to rest and will need to be careful not to disturb the clot formation. You should heal quickly.
