Dental Cleanings

More than Just Cleaning Teeth

Dental CleaningsYou may wonder why daily brushing and flossing isn’t enough to keep you out of the dentist’s chair. Home hygiene is certainly a significant factor in maintaining oral health, but Dr. Hakimzadeh, Dr. Reyhani, and our team have tools and training that surpass what you can accomplish at home.

Why Do I Need Cleanings?

You can take stellar care of your teeth but still may end up with tooth decay and cavities, gum disease, or other dental health issues that can be prevented with regular dental cleanings. We can also recognize abnormalities, such as oral lesions or other signs of oral cancer, before they become dramatically more serious.

What Can I Expect?

Our team will explain each portion of the exam and cleaning process, inviting questions so you feel comfortable. We use a variety of innovative tools to thoroughly clean your teeth of plaque and tartar, and advanced diagnostic equipment to inspect your teeth, gums, and oral tissues for signs of trouble.

After discussing your dental health history, we can monitor any existing issues. In addition to a visual exam, we may also take digital X-rays of your teeth. For advanced issues, we may use DIAGNOdent, a detection tool that helps us identify bacterial infections and early cavity formation, or other screening methods.

What Should I Do Between Cleanings?

To keep up your part of the oral hygiene process, you will need to perform daily care at home. Adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Brush teeth twice daily with a soft bristle brush – don’t choose hard or medium, which may damage enamel. Brush once in the morning and once before bed, and 30 minutes after meals whenever possible.
  • Choose toothpaste with fluoride for stronger tooth enamel. When in doubt, look for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval to ensure the toothpaste is accepted for daily use.
  • Floss at least once a day before brushing. If flossing is difficult, consider using a dental pick for more control.
  • Replace your toothbrush once every three months, or as soon as you notice that the bristles are frayed.

While some patients need more frequent maintenance, we encourage you to schedule an appointment for a cleaning and exam at least once every six months, unless otherwise specified.
