TMJ (temporomandibular joint) treatment addresses problems associated with the jaw joints, such as pain or impaired movement. If you have recurring problems in this area, then we will exam you and diagnose the cause of your symptoms, then customize an appropriate treatment plan to restore your jaw’s health and function, and your overall comfort.
What are TMJs?
TMJs are the joints that connect your jawbone to the rest of your skull; issues that affect these joints and their function are collectively known as TMJ disorders. Because a variety of problems may arise when your TMJs are not functioning properly, you may experience one or several symptoms, often without realizing they are associated with your jaw. We will discuss your symptoms with you and form a diagnosis following a thorough examination. CT scans or digital X-rays may provide greater detail in pinpointing the source of your discomfort. Common symptoms of TMJ disorder include:
- Your jaw clicks or pops when you open or close your mouth
- Opening or closing your mouth is occasionally inhibited by a locked jaw
- Pain or tenderness near your jawbone
- Difficult or painful chewing
- Aches in surrounding areas, including your neck, head, and shoulders
- Ringing in the ears
- Chronic headaches and migraines
What Treatment Options Are Available?
TMJ treatment options depend on the cause of your condition. Common causes include;
- bruxism, or teeth grinding
- muscle tension as a result of stress
- an eroded joint disk
- damaged joint cartilage
- or general TMJ/dental damage.
In some cases, we may suggest over-the-counter pain medication to help temporarily relieve discomfort. In more serious cases, we can discuss prescription medications for more severe pain.
In general, treatment focuses on therapy. Surgery is often a last course of action, unless the cause is physical damage in need of restoration. Special exercises, ultrasound, cold-and-heat compress therapy, and stress reduction can provide TMJ relief. For nighttime teeth clenching, we can fit your mouth with a bite guard to decrease the pressure placed on your jawbone and joints.
