Why We Recommend Extractions
Our goal is to help you preserve as much of your healthy, natural tooth structure as possible. However, certain types of damage and trauma can make a tooth unfit for restorative treatment. If we cannot save your tooth, then we can carefully remove it to prevent the spread of infection or injury to your supportive gum tissues and jawbone. After an extraction, we can also provide you with options for replacing your missing tooth and restoring your smile’s beauty and function.
When Do I Need an Extraction?
Some of the reasons a tooth extraction may benefit your dental health include:
- Root canal treatment and antibiotics have failed to cure an infection. If you leave the tooth, infection may spread.
- Your tooth is damaged beyond repair or too delicate to support a crown. Ignoring the problem may cause nerve damage, tooth decay, and eventual tooth loss.
- Gum disease has resulted in a loose tooth. Waiting it out may cause tooth infection, misalignment, and damage to surrounding structures.
- A wisdom tooth, or other tooth, has become impacted, causing severe discomfort and possibly leading to damage and tooth misalignment.
What Can I Expect?
We will apply a local anesthetic to numb the area. While you will not experience pain, you might feel pressure while your dentist works to remove the tooth.
When you arrive home, you will need to eat soft foods for a couple of days and chew on the opposite side of your mouth. We can prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection while healing, and you may need to bite down on gauze to stop minor bleeding for a short time after the procedure.
As your empty socket heals, a clot will form. The clot is the body’s natural oral scab production. Like any scab, removing it disrupts healing. Do not suck liquids through straws or smoke, as this motion can dislodge the clot.
