There are various reasons adults may lose their teeth, for instance trauma or due to dental diseases, such as gum disease. The
result, however, is almost always the same: concern. For some patients the fears are primarily esthetic, but for others losing a tooth or teeth can mean decreased functionality chewing or even speaking clearly. Thanks to modern dentistry, though, patients have many more comfortable and natural-looking options available to help them complete their smiles. Partial or complete dentures often come to mind when a person suffers from teeth loss. But for many patients, dental implants can be the best choice, because of both their durability and their natural look.
The Steps Involved in Dental Implants
At Downey Family Cosmetic Dentistry we’re able to perform all parts of the dental implant procedure, from the initial consultation to the final placement of the prosthetic crown, making the process smoother and easier on our patients.
If a patient is a good fit for dental implants, the first step is to place a titanium post into the mouth. Over time the post will actually fuse with the jawbone.
Titanium is not only a strong metal, it is highly biocompatible, which means it’s better suited than most metals to bond with the human bone. Unlike metals used in past dentistry, titanium is both a permanent solution, and much safer. In fact, it’s considered “osseointegrative,” which basically means that the metal is directly connected to the structure and function of the bone. This is why it’s become a common choice for not only dental implants, but joint replacements and hearing implants as well.
Once the titanium post has fused to the jawbone, it creates a permanent base for the second step of completing the smile, a false tooth. This porcelain crown is crafted to match a person’s other teeth, and affixed to the post, so that when the implant is completed, it’s nearly, and sometimes completely, undistinguishable from the surrounding teeth.
