Don’t Drink your Cavities

Girl Drinking Sports DrinkIs there anything on earth harder than diamonds? No, but there is something in your body which is second in line. Tooth enamel. After glass-cutting diamonds, the coating on your teeth is the next hardest substance on earth. Since your teeth are guarded by something so strong, healthy teeth should be a given, right? Unfortunately, damage to your tooth enamel still happens with all of life’s wear and tear. Unfortunately, you may consume many acidic foods and beverages which temporarily soften enamel, making you’re your teeth susceptible to damage and tooth decay.

Science Simulates your Mouth

According to a scientific research study published in the journal General Dentistry, energy and sports beverages are wreaking havoc on children and adults in America. These liquid substances are often full of ingredients which are supposed to be quenching, replenishing, and energizing. Sports and energy drinks are unfortunately extremely damaging to your tooth enamel if you drink them too often. Southern Illinois University School of Dentistry housed the research study, experimenting on actual tooth enamel samples which were soaked in one of several types of acidic energy or sports drinks. The tooth enamel samples were then given a bath in artificial saliva. This experiment was designed to simulate the way a person would process these beverages inside their mouth. While certain brands and flavors tested were certainly more acidic than others, all of the drinks damaged the faux tooth enamel to some degree.

Making Up for Bad Decisions

Any food or beverage which has a high acid level is going to soften your tooth enamel for about 30 minutes. Many times, people believe that after a sweet cola or a binge on citrus fruits, they should brush their teeth. Wait for the half hour period to give your enamel a chance to re-harden. The bristles of a toothbrush and toothpaste itself are abrasive and can cause permanent damage that will allow bacteria to infect your teeth and give you cavities. One thing you can do right away, however, is to rinse your mouth with water to neutralize acids.
