It can be the lingering remnants of a recent meal, or just the normal condition your mouth is in when you wake up; either way, bad breath is embarrassing. When it doesn’t go away by conventional methods (i.e., brushing your teeth, rinsing with mouthwash, chewing sugarless gum, etc.), then the condition is known as halitosis, and embarrassment might be only one of your concerns. Fortunately, you can typically regain your confidence by finding the source (usually poor hygiene), and taking steps to freshen your breath for good.
The Basics of Bad Breath
In most cases (besides food), you can blame your bad breath on the bacteria that hang around inside your mouth; particularly the ones that cling to the surface of your tongue. The living microorganisms metabolize the nutrients from your meals, like protein, and some of the bacteria convert them into volatile sulfur gases. These are similar to the gases released by rotten eggs and other pungent substances, and when enough bacteria are present, the smell they emit can be overwhelming. Therefore, poor hygiene practices and neglecting regular dental care are among the most common causes of embarrassing breath.
Fresh Breath for Life
Unless the odor is the result of a dental infection, such as tooth decay or periodontal disease, you can likely improve your bad breath by improving how well you care for your hygiene.
- Brushing and flossing your teeth is only effective if you’re consistent. Do so at least twice every day, and be sure to brush your tongue with your toothbrush or a tongue scraper to remove the bacteria gathered there.
- When you wake in the morning, eat a well-balanced breakfast before brushing your teeth. Eating will kick-start your saliva flow, which will help dislodge the bacteria and plaque that have accumulated overnight.
- When you’re thirsty, drink water. Not only is it necessary to your overall health; it also washes away oral bacteria and fights the substances they produce, while helping you stay hydrated to promote a healthy flow of saliva throughout the entire day.
