Clear Braces vs. Metal Braces

History-TeacherYou probably hear a lot of buzz from friends and family members about clear braces. While the idea probably sounds wonderful to you, your initial questions may revolve heavily around how clear braces compare to metal braces. Patients often wonder, for example, whether the clear systems, Invisalign and ClearCorrect, will be able to address their particular concerns, or if one is more budget-friendly over the other. We encourage you to ask us whether this treatment may work for you during your next visit. In the meantime, we invite you to look over the following questions and answers:

Do Your Clear Braces Use Brackets and Wires?

No, our clear systems rely on the use of clear aligner trays. Free of BPA, the clear, smooth plastic trays are made to fit comfortably over your teeth. You will wear one tray in a series of trays for a period of time until it has completed its portion of treatment. You will then continue onto the next tray, graduating through the full series. This treatment is far less visible – nearly invisible – when compared with metal braces.

Are The Trays Fixed In Place?

No, unlike metal braces, which are bonded to your teeth, the trays are removable. You will need to wear them for 20 to 22 hours each day. Fortunately, this means you may remove them to eat and to take care of your teeth and gums.

Do Clear Trays Fix the Same Malocclusions?

Your malocclusion – or the way your teeth are misaligned – may or may not require metal braces. Metal is typically necessary in the case of severe malocclusion – particularly individual teeth that require serious shifting and require a bracket. However, clear braces may improve most problems, including over bite, underbite, crossbite, overcrowding, and spacing.

Are Clear and Metal Priced Similarly?

Yes, in fact. You can typically expect a similar price. Most dental insurance companies also cover clear systems just like they do metal orthodontics.
