A Guide to Dentistry for Children

FLossing ChildPrimary teeth are more commonly known as baby teeth. We think of them as temporary, but they have an important role in the dental development of babies and young children. Yes, they will eventually be lost, and in their place will come a permanent tooth. You’ve probably noticed kids around the age of seven or eight with big teeth that look like they don’t quite fit their mouths. They’ll grow into them in time. It is important, though that good dental habits are established early on in life for the youngest members of our society.

Toddler Diet Overhaul

One of the biggest problems we see in our office when it comes to children’s teeth is that snacking has become a cultural norm. Most toddlers can be seen exploring their world with a sippy cup of apple juice in one hand, and a bag of bite-sized crackers in the other. That’s why we suggest healthy snacks (like veggies and low-fat cheese) and limiting high-carbohydrate and sugary munchies. Water is a better hydration choice than sweet, concentrated juices. If your little one is hooked on juice, consider cutting it with water to reduce the sugar content. Parents should be aware that cavities and periodontal disease  can be issues with kids, just the same as adults.

Stick to the Eruption Schedule

Take your baby in for their initial dental exam after their first tooth erupts. This way, Dr. Hakimzadeh will be able to tell if there are any developmental problems that need to be tackled. Ask for a schedule of when to expect subsequent eruptions and losses of primary teeth. With such an effort, you will be able to be proactive in a swifter manner if something is amiss. Don’t panic if things aren’t to the letter, however. No two children are exactly the same. The rates of teething and losing teeth are bound to occur at variable rates, but a general guideline is good to be aware of.
