The cost of crowns can vary, based on a number of factors. Everything that goes into manufacturing dental crowns, from materials to where the crowns were actually made, affects the final price. While most dental insurance policies cover a portion of the cost for dental crowns, anticipating the final out-of-pocket expense is important to you, the patient.
Cost of Crowns Based on Materials
- PMFs. The PMF (or porcelain-fused-to-metal) crown has a middle-of-the-road cost, with metal and porcelain crowns ranging from the low to high end, respectively. PMFs cost roughly $500 to $1,500 per tooth, and as aforementioned, the price can vary, depending upon the lab location, quality of porcelain and metal, experience of the ceramist, dentist’s office location, dentist’s experience, and overhead of the dentist’s office. Without insurance, patients should expect to pay anywhere from $850 to $1,500. However, with coverage, the out-of-pocket cost decreases to the $280 to $1,000 range.
- Metal. Metal crowns tend to cost a little less; yet their cost is greatly dependent upon the type of metal used. For example, a silver crown could cost a little more than $1,000 without insurance. On the other hand, a gold alloy crown may cost close to $1,200 with insurance.
- Porcelain. Today, porcelain crowns come in many varieties, so providing a ballpark figure is difficult. Your dentist can review your case, determine what type of crown you need, and review your insurance coverage, then provide you with a fairly accurate estimate of your out-of-pocket expense. Patients should note that all-porcelain crowns cost the most. On average, patients should expect to pay about $1,000 for a porcelain-made crown, without or without insurance.
