Have you recently broken your tooth? Perhaps you visited us for a toothache only to find out you have a cavity that has progressed beyond the need for a dental filling and only a crown will do. Fortunately, the benefits of dental crowns are extraordinary, if not for the simple fact that they often allow you to keep your natural tooth in your mouth without requiring its removal. However, we find that patients often feel uneasy about the suggestion for a crown because – unlike the very common filling – it is simply new territory. By finding out more about what you can expect, you will feel much more relaxed and even excited about your soon-to-be repaired tooth. Ready to learn more? Consider the following information:
Your Consultation
Before we even begin creating your crown, we will first meet with you to discuss what you can expect through each step. We will thoroughly examine your mouth and explain your options, such as different types of crown materials and what will work best for your smile.
We Will Take Impressions
In order to create your dental crown, we must begin by taking impressions of your teeth. This will provide us with a model on which to build your crown and to ensure your bite will remain comfortable, balanced, and undisturbed. We will send the impressions to a dental lab.
A Lab Will Create Your Crown
You will not receive a one-size-fits-all crown. Instead, you will receive a crown carefully created to fit your needs, to match surrounding teeth, and to provide ultimate coverage and protection to your damaged tooth. Your dental crown will be custom-designed and created by a highly skilled technician at the dental lab.
You Will Wear A Temporary Crown
You will wear a temporary crown while your permanent one is being made. This will protect your tooth and complete your smile while you wait.
We Will Place The Permanent Crown
Once we receive the finished crown, you will visit us for another appointment. We will place it permanently over your tooth. Before you leave, we will make sure your bite feels comfortable and may make minor adjustments.
