How many cups of coffee do you enjoy each morning? Approximately half of the adults in the United States enjoy a morning cup of “joe.” Among that percentage, many Americans drink coffee throughout the day. For those of us who are coffee drinkers indulging in as many as four (or more) cups of coffee each day, a surprising side effect to all of that rich, warm java has been recently uncovered. One published study connects excessive coffee drinking to a lower risk of oral/pharyngeal cancer.
Mouth and Throat Cancer
Mouth and throat cancer (oral/pharyngeal cancer) often goes undetected in the earliest stages because there are so few symptoms until the cancer becomes advanced. Oral malignancy indicators sometimes seem similar to more minor dental issues such as canker sores and toothaches. Any bumps or pain in your mouth which fails to heal after two weeks should garner a visit to see your Downey family dentists. Common risk factors for mouth and throat cancer include alcohol and tobacco use. However, non-drinkers and non-smokers are not immune to oral/pharyngeal cancer.
Coffee Cancer Cure
A published study from the American Cancer Society (ACS) in Atlanta, Georgia was penned by author/head scientist Janet Hildebrand. The research team compiled notes from previous studies which focused on coffee drinking as a means to lowering the risk for mouth and throat cancer. Going deeper into this idea, the scientists indeed found lowered risk for cancer in patients who regularly ingested caffeine. However, it is still not completely clear if the polyphenols, antioxidants, and other cancer-fighting compounds in the dark roasted elixir can be given credit for lower cancer risks, or if something else in coffee (even possibly caffeine itself) should receive credit. More research and time will tell.
