Oral Cancer and Preventive Care

shutterstock_183710612You may think to yourself that you would simply rather avoid worrying about the negative things that can happen when it comes to your oral health. Instead, you probably prefer to visualize your beautiful, healthy smile. We recognize that talking and thinking about oral cancer and its potentially destructive side effects is never anyone’s first choice. However, one of the reasons we feel so strongly about screening for this disease is because the sooner we detect a problem, the sooner we can treat it, and the greater our chances of keeping you safe and healthy. We encourage you to consider the following information, so you feel fully informed and understand the great power of prevention:

Early Detection Is Critical

Oral cancer can quickly spread from your mouth, where it begins in a pre-cancerous stage that we can detect, into surrounding areas of your body. What begins as a non-tumorous problem will develop into tumors that may make their way into your neck, lymph nodes, and surrounding tissues. In these locations, they become increasingly difficult to treat. In its earliest stage it is much easier to treat, giving us the ability to prevent its spread, while quickly guiding you back toward good oral health.

Prevention Is Easy

Prevention is often as simple as visiting us once every six months for a dental checkup. During this time, we will screen your for oral cancer. Unlike your ability to check for symptoms on your own, we have technology that allow us to detect changes in the lining of your mouth before the pre-cancerous cells blossoms into cancer. With this in mind, we encourage you to contact us if you notice any type of change in your mouth – even if it’s nothing at all, we would rather protect your health and err on the side of safety.
