Tooth Infections and Root Canal Therapy

replicated-toothWhen it comes to treating an infected tooth, the trick is to first determine how serious the condition is. If the cavity, or hole, caused by the infection is minor, then you can likely restore the tooth with a non-invasive, tooth-colored dental filling. For cavities that may be a bit larger, the filling may be accompanied by a protective dental crown. Sometimes, however, tooth decay can be so pervasive that a filling will not suffice, in which case you may require root canal therapy to remove the infection and restore the tooth’s strength and function.

The Nature of Serious Tooth Infections

A tooth infection, often referred to as tooth decay, begins with the bacteria that naturally inhabit your mouth. Over time, the germs will combine with the saliva and food particles in your mouth, creating the sticky biofilm known as plaque that clings to your teeth and oral tissues. From the protection of plaque, and its hardened form, tartar, oral bacteria can grow strong enough to destroy your teeth’s outer protective layer, called enamel. Once the layer is compromised, bacteria can infect the main tooth structure underneath, leading to tooth decay and the formation of a cavity.

The Point of Root Canal Treatment

A root canal treatment describes the removal of infected tooth structure and the tissues from the center of the tooth (called the pulp). When decay reaches the center pulp and tissues of the tooth, the nerves and tissues will become infected and potentially die. If not removed, the infection can spread through the tooth’s root canals, which are connected to the pulp and extend into your gum tissues and jawbone.

The Potential Alternative

The main point of root canal treatment is to save a tooth from severe infection. However, if the tooth cannot be saved, then it may have to be extracted, and then replaced, to preserve your oral health and restore your smile’s function and appearance.
