01 Exams & Cleanings

Routine cleanings in Downey.

Comprehensive exams and professional cleanings every six months, the foundation of a healthy smile for life.

02 Why Routine Care Matters

Prevention is the best dentistry.

Routine dental exams and cleanings every six months are the single most important habit for long-term oral health. They prevent cavities before they form, catch issues like gum disease and oral cancer early, and remove plaque and tartar that home brushing cannot reach.

At each visit, a hygienist performs a thorough professional cleaning, removing plaque and tartar from teeth and below the gumline, polishing surfaces, and applying fluoride when appropriate. The visit also includes a comprehensive exam by Dr. Hadis Reyhani or Dr. Kiro Farag, digital X-rays as needed, and an oral cancer screening.

Most patients are scheduled every six months. Patients with periodontal disease, higher cavity risk, or specific medical conditions may need more frequent visits, every three to four months. Dr. Stephen, our in-house periodontist, sees periodontal maintenance patients on the more frequent schedule when needed.

Dental insurance plans cover preventive care at high reimbursement rates, often 100 percent of cleaning, exam, and X-ray costs. We accept most PPO plans and verify your benefits before each appointment so there are no surprises.

03 What's Included

Everything in a routine visit.

A typical 60-minute appointment covers all of these touchpoints, comprehensive but unhurried.

  • Comprehensive Exam

Full evaluation of teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints, and soft tissues. Looking for cavities, gum disease, alignment issues, and any other concerns that need attention or monitoring.

  • Professional Cleaning

Removal of plaque and tartar above and below the gumline using ultrasonic and hand instruments. Followed by polishing to remove surface stains and leave teeth smooth.

  • Digital X-Rays

Modern digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film. We capture only the X-rays needed based on your individual risk and history, typically every 1 to 2 years for most patients.

  • Oral Cancer Screening

Visual and tactile examination of the lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, and other soft tissues for any signs of oral cancer. Early detection significantly improves outcomes.

  • Fluoride Treatment

Professional-strength fluoride applied to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities, particularly important for patients with higher cavity risk, dry mouth, or recent cavity history.

  • Treatment Discussion

Clear conversation about anything found during the exam, with photos and X-rays to show you what we see. Treatment recommendations come with options, costs, and timeline, never pressure.

04 Is It Time

Signs you are due for a cleaning.

Every six months is the standard recommendation. But if you are unsure or have not been to a dentist in a while, here are clear signs it is time to schedule.

  • It has been more than six months since your last cleaning.
  • Your gums bleed when you brush or floss.
  • Persistent bad breath that does not improve with brushing.
  • Visible plaque or tartar buildup, especially on bottom front teeth.
  • Tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods.
  • Discomfort or pain when chewing.
  • You have not had a cleaning since before the pandemic.
  • You are pregnant or planning pregnancy (oral health affects pregnancy outcomes).
  • You have diabetes, heart disease, or other systemic health conditions.

If it has been a long time since your last cleaning, do not let embarrassment delay scheduling. We see patients who have been away from dental care for years all the time. No judgment, no lectures, just a starting point to get back on track.

05 What To Expect

Your routine appointment, step by step.

A typical visit takes about 60 minutes from check-in to checkout.

  1. 01

    Check-In & Intake

Quick verification of insurance, any updates to your medical history, and a brief conversation about anything new or concerning since your last visit.

  2. 02

    Cleaning by Your Hygienist

30 to 45 minutes of professional cleaning. Plaque and tartar removal above and below the gumline, polishing, and flossing. Most patients find this comfortable, just slightly intensive flossing.

  3. 03

    X-Rays (When Needed)

Digital X-rays as appropriate based on your risk and last imaging. Most patients have full-mouth X-rays every 3 to 5 years and bitewings every 1 to 2 years.

  4. 04

    Doctor Exam

15 to 20 minutes with Dr. Hadis Reyhani or Dr. Kiro Farag for comprehensive exam, oral cancer screening, and discussion of any findings. You see what we see, photos, X-rays, anything relevant.

  5. 05

    Treatment Planning

If anything needs follow-up, we discuss options, costs, and timing. Nothing pressured. Many cleanings end with no treatment needed except scheduling your next routine visit.

06 Common Questions

Questions about routine care?

Routine cleanings should not be confusing. Here are the questions patients ask most often.

Ask a Question

Most patients should have a routine cleaning and exam every six months. Patients with periodontal disease, high cavity risk, diabetes, or certain medical conditions may need more frequent visits, typically every three to four months. We recommend a schedule based on your individual oral health, not a one-size-fits-all rule.

07 Why Us

Routine care, done right.

Routine cleanings are the most common dental appointment, but the difference between a rushed visit and a thorough one shapes your long-term oral health.

We schedule full hour-long appointments rather than 30-minute rushed visits. That extra time means thorough cleaning, comprehensive exam, and real conversations about your care.

  • Bilingual hygiene team

Our hygienists provide care in English and Spanish. Comfort and clear communication during routine visits matter, especially for nervous patients.

  • Flexible scheduling

Extended weekday hours available for working patients. Family scheduling lets multiple family members come in together when possible.

  • Coordinated with specialty care

If your routine cleaning reveals gum disease, Dr. Stephen is on staff for periodontal evaluation. Cavity issues, restorative concerns, or cosmetic interest? All handled in our office without referrals.
