Comprehensive Exam
Full evaluation of teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints, and soft tissues. Looking for cavities, gum disease, alignment issues, and any other concerns that need attention or monitoring.
Comprehensive exams and professional cleanings every six months, the foundation of a healthy smile for life.
Routine dental exams and cleanings every six months are the single most important habit for long-term oral health. They prevent cavities before they form, catch issues like gum disease and oral cancer early, and remove plaque and tartar that home brushing cannot reach.
At each visit, a hygienist performs a thorough professional cleaning, removing plaque and tartar from teeth and below the gumline, polishing surfaces, and applying fluoride when appropriate. The visit also includes a comprehensive exam by Dr. Hadis Reyhani or Dr. Kiro Farag, digital X-rays as needed, and an oral cancer screening.
Most patients are scheduled every six months. Patients with periodontal disease, higher cavity risk, or specific medical conditions may need more frequent visits, every three to four months. Dr. Stephen, our in-house periodontist, sees periodontal maintenance patients on the more frequent schedule when needed.
Dental insurance plans cover preventive care at high reimbursement rates, often 100 percent of cleaning, exam, and X-ray costs. We accept most PPO plans and verify your benefits before each appointment so there are no surprises.
A typical 60-minute appointment covers all of these touchpoints, comprehensive but unhurried.
Full evaluation of teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints, and soft tissues. Looking for cavities, gum disease, alignment issues, and any other concerns that need attention or monitoring.
Removal of plaque and tartar above and below the gumline using ultrasonic and hand instruments. Followed by polishing to remove surface stains and leave teeth smooth.
Modern digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film. We capture only the X-rays needed based on your individual risk and history, typically every 1 to 2 years for most patients.
Visual and tactile examination of the lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, and other soft tissues for any signs of oral cancer. Early detection significantly improves outcomes.
Professional-strength fluoride applied to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities, particularly important for patients with higher cavity risk, dry mouth, or recent cavity history.
Clear conversation about anything found during the exam, with photos and X-rays to show you what we see. Treatment recommendations come with options, costs, and timeline, never pressure.
Every six months is the standard recommendation. But if you are unsure or have not been to a dentist in a while, here are clear signs it is time to schedule.
If it has been a long time since your last cleaning, do not let embarrassment delay scheduling. We see patients who have been away from dental care for years all the time. No judgment, no lectures, just a starting point to get back on track.
Schedule Your CleaningA typical visit takes about 60 minutes from check-in to checkout.
Quick verification of insurance, any updates to your medical history, and a brief conversation about anything new or concerning since your last visit.
30 to 45 minutes of professional cleaning. Plaque and tartar removal above and below the gumline, polishing, and flossing. Most patients find this comfortable, just slightly intensive flossing.
Digital X-rays as appropriate based on your risk and last imaging. Most patients have full-mouth X-rays every 3 to 5 years and bitewings every 1 to 2 years.
15 to 20 minutes with Dr. Hadis Reyhani or Dr. Kiro Farag for comprehensive exam, oral cancer screening, and discussion of any findings. You see what we see, photos, X-rays, anything relevant.
If anything needs follow-up, we discuss options, costs, and timing. Nothing pressured. Many cleanings end with no treatment needed except scheduling your next routine visit.
Routine cleanings should not be confusing. Here are the questions patients ask most often.
Ask a QuestionMost patients should have a routine cleaning and exam every six months. Patients with periodontal disease, high cavity risk, diabetes, or certain medical conditions may need more frequent visits, typically every three to four months. We recommend a schedule based on your individual oral health, not a one-size-fits-all rule.
Bleeding gums during cleaning typically indicate gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease caused by plaque buildup. It is not normal but it is reversible with regular professional cleanings and improved home care. Persistent bleeding, especially when brushing or flossing at home, is a sign you should see Dr. Stephen, our in-house periodontist, for evaluation.
Cost depends on whether it is a standard prophylaxis cleaning or a periodontal maintenance cleaning, plus any X-rays needed. Most dental insurance plans cover routine cleanings at 100 percent, often twice per year. We verify your specific benefits before each appointment so you have a clear understanding of any out-of-pocket cost. CareCredit financing is available if needed.
A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) is preventive care for healthy gums, cleaning above and around the gumline. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is therapeutic treatment for patients with gum disease, cleaning below the gumline to remove tartar and bacteria from periodontal pockets. Deep cleaning is more involved, typically requires local anesthesia, and is provided by Dr. Stephen for advanced cases.
We see patients who have been away from dental care for years all the time. No judgment, no lectures. Your first visit will likely involve a comprehensive exam, full-mouth X-rays, and possibly a deeper cleaning if significant tartar has accumulated. From there, we build a treatment plan to get you back to health. Patients are often surprised how quickly things can improve once routine care resumes.
Yes, especially modern digital X-rays. Digital imaging uses significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays. The amount of radiation from a typical bitewing X-ray is comparable to what you receive from a few hours of normal background environmental radiation. We only take X-rays when clinically needed and explain why before each set is captured.
We accept most PPO plans including Delta Dental, MetLife, Cigna, Aetna, and Anthem. Most plans cover preventive care, including routine cleanings and exams, at 100 percent twice per year. We verify your specific benefits before each appointment so there are no surprises.
