01Fluoride & Sealants

Cavity prevention in Downey.

Professional fluoride treatments and protective sealants, proven, affordable, and one of the most cost-effective dentistry decisions you can make.

02Why Prevention Matters

Stopping cavities before they start.

The best dental treatment is the one you never need. Fluoride treatments and dental sealants are two of the most effective preventive interventions available, particularly for patients at higher cavity risk. They are quick, affordable, and often covered by dental insurance.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens tooth enamel against acid attacks from bacteria. Professional fluoride applied during a routine cleaning is significantly more concentrated than what you get from toothpaste or drinking water, providing months of additional protection between visits.

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings painted onto the deep grooves of molars, where most cavities in kids and teens form. The sealant fills the grooves, preventing food and bacteria from accumulating in places a toothbrush cannot reach. Sealants are especially valuable on permanent molars as they erupt, typically around ages 6, 12, and 18 to 21 (when wisdom teeth come in).

Most patients benefiting from these treatments are kids and teens, but adults at higher cavity risk also benefit, particularly patients with dry mouth from medications, recent cavity history, exposed roots from gum recession, or ongoing orthodontic treatment that makes home care harder.

03Two Treatments, Two Purposes

Fluoride treatments vs. dental sealants.

Both prevent cavities, but they work differently and are used in different situations.

  • Fluoride Treatments

    • Liquid or gel applied to teeth during a routine cleaning visit
    • Strengthens enamel against acid attacks from bacteria
    • Particularly effective at reducing cavities in early stages, including reversing very early decay
    • Takes 1 to 3 minutes to apply, no discomfort
    • Recommended every 6 months for high-risk patients, annually for moderate risk
  • Dental Sealants

    • Thin protective coating painted into grooves of molars
    • Physical barrier preventing food and bacteria from reaching tooth surface
    • Most effective on newly erupted permanent molars (ages 6 to 21)
    • Takes 5 to 10 minutes per tooth to apply, completely painless
    • Last 5 to 10 years with normal wear, easy to reapply when needed

04Is It Right For You

Who benefits most from preventive treatments.

Fluoride and sealants are not for everyone, but they make a meaningful difference for specific groups.

Kids and teens (most common candidates)

  • Children with newly erupted permanent molars (typically ages 6, 12, and 18 to 21)
  • Kids with deep tooth grooves prone to trapping food
  • Children with previous cavities or higher decay risk
  • Patients in active orthodontic treatment with braces
  • Kids in early stages of mixed dentition (some baby teeth, some permanent)

Adults (less common but valuable)

  • Patients with dry mouth from medications, age, or medical conditions
  • Patients with recent cavity history or active decay
  • Patients with exposed root surfaces from gum recession
  • Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment as adults
  • Patients with weakened enamel from acid reflux, eating disorders, or diet

We evaluate cavity risk individually at routine cleanings and recommend preventive treatments when they are likely to make a meaningful difference. We do not push these treatments on patients who do not need them.

06Common Questions

Questions about prevention?

Parents in particular ask about fluoride and sealants. Honest answers below.

Ask a Question
  • Most kids start receiving professional fluoride treatments at routine cleaning visits once permanent teeth begin erupting, typically around ages 6 and continuing through adolescence. Younger children may receive fluoride based on their individual cavity risk. We do not over-fluoridate. Children getting adequate fluoride from drinking water, fluoride toothpaste, and a low-cavity-risk diet may not need additional professional fluoride at every visit.

07Why Us

Prevention as a clinical priority.

We focus heavily on prevention because it works. Patients who get the right preventive care early need significantly less restorative work later.

  • Family-friendly preventive care

Most of our preventive treatments go to kids and teens. Our hygiene team is experienced with younger patients and patients with first-time concerns.

  • Risk-based recommendations

We assess cavity risk individually rather than applying one-size-fits-all recommendations. Some patients benefit from frequent fluoride; others do not need it as often.

  • Bilingual education for parents and kids

Preventive care depends on understanding why it matters. We explain treatments in English and Spanish so parents and patients can make informed decisions.

  • Coordinated with broader care

If preventive treatments need to be combined with restorative work, orthodontic care, or other services, our integrated team handles it all in one practice.
